Car break-ins, shooting reported at 2 Baymeadows apartment complexes

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Action News Jax is asking officers if they believe one shooting and several car break-ins at two apartment complexes in Baymeadows are connected.

Action News Jax first reported someone was shot at the Baytree Apartments on Old Baymeadows Road on Action News Jax This Morning at 6:30 a.m.

Residents then started contacting us about car break-ins at the complex next door.

Danielle Wilsey was among up to a dozen residents who woke up to find their car windows shattered at The Avenues apartments.

“I ran down here and the first thing I noticed obviously was the glass on the floor. Busted window, everything strung out of my center console,” Wilsey said.

Glass covered the back seat of one car. Action News Jax was with residents as they filed reports with police.

A chain-link fence with a big hole in it separates the Avenues complex from Baytree Apartments. The path through the fence leads to the parking lot where someone was shot.

“I actually didn’t know there was an apartment complex over there until I had seen people walking out of there. The majority of the time, they walk straight through that hole,” Wilsey said.

The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office wouldn’t say Tuesday morning if the shooting victim was a man or woman, only that they are expected to survive.

We’re still waiting to hear if detectives believe the shooting and break-ins are connected.

Management at The Avenues said they are checking lighting around residents’ homes to try to prevent any more break-ins.

Statement:

“We’ve been disheartened to hear of the recent rash of car break-ins in the area and we have not been spared. Nothing is more important to us than our resident’s safety and security. All of us at GoldOller, and especially the entire team at The Avenues Apartments, take that responsibility very seriously. In an effort to discourage break-ins, we are redoubling our efforts on regular exterior light checks and bulb replacement and ask for residents and neighbors to please let us know if we’ve missed any so that we can address them as soon as possible. Additionally, we advise our residents and visitors to make sure their cars are locked and not to leave any valuables in their vehicles. We encourage residents to contact our office with any questions, comments, or concerns. To our residents; If you have any concerns about your safety or that of your neighbors, please call 911 in the event of an emergency, or if not an emergency, call the management office.”
