Cedar Hills Elementary School holds parade Friday to cheer on students

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Teachers at Cedar Hills Elementary School are bringing a little cheer to their students who are stuck inside doing online learning during the COVID-19 pandemic.

More than 30 teachers came out to show support to their students.

Cedar Hills Elementary School students and the rest of Duval County started their virtual learning through Duval Homeroom this week.

“My teachers have really taken hold of all of the aspects of this virtual world we’re in right now. They’re creating everything from virtual field trips to doing live Read-Alouds,” Principal Marva McKinney said.

During the parade, the teachers stayed in their cars and waved to their students in order to practice social distancing amid fears of the coronavirus.

Mckinney said although the online classes have been successful her teachers miss seeing their students.

After watching parades in districts like Nassau and Clay counties earlier this week she thought a teacher parade would bring some joy to her students.

"With everything going on we just thought this would be a great way to break the monotony of everything that’s going on around us and to show the students that we’re here for them," she said.

Some teachers brought their own decorated signs to put on their cars encouraging these kids to keep up the good work.
