Dozens of northeast FL schools will benefit from FDOT school zone improvement project

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. —

Dozens of northeast Florida schools will soon get safety upgrades to school zones to protect students.

The Florida Department of Transportation began a districtwide school zone safety improvement project this week.

As part of the $1.5 million project, FDOT District 2 will upgrade 141 school zones in 13 counties.

FDOT stated the project is part of a statewide effort to improve school zone safety in response to House Bill 493 which passed in 2017.

Improvements include new high-visibility markings and school zone signage and, in some locations, flashing beacons.

FDOT stated upgrades at each school zone are expected to take less than a day to complete, and there should be minimal traffic impacts during construction.

The agency hopes construction will be done by summer 2021.

These are the counties included in the project:

  • Alachua, six school zones.
  • Baker, one school zone.
  • Bradford, three school zones.
  • Clay, 15 school zones.
  • Columbia, six school zones.
  • Duval, 67 school zones.
  • Gilchrist, one school zone.
  • Levy, three school zones.
  • Nassau, 10 school zones.
  • Putnam, 13 school zones.
  • St Johns, nine school zones.
  • Suwannee, three school zones.
  • Taylor, four school zones.
