Jacksonville, FL. — The clock is ticking on parents' decision to enroll their students in Duval HomeRoom. The deadline is Friday, Sept. 25 at 11:59 P.M., and after that, enrollment will be closed for the rest of the school year.
Parents will only be allowed to switch their children back to brick-and-mortar classes. Some parents and teachers expressed confusion and said they thought they had the option to enroll each quarter.
In a clarifying note, the district told parents, “For the third and fourth quarters, transitions will be limited to Duval HomeRoom students wishing to transfer to brick-and-mortar.”
The district told Action News Jax that this plan is consistent with what the state-approved.
Shannon Russell-Hinds is an 11th-grade teacher at Sandalwood High School. She said parents should weigh the decision heavily. She expressed concerns that HomeRoom would be closed for enrollment after Friday.
“We might want to reassess the situation as we go. We know flu season is coming up and people might need to change their plans accordingly,” she said. “I would plan for the worst and switch to an online platform because we know COVID-19 is still here.”
As of Tuesday, more than 3,500 students have requested to cancel their Duval HomeRoom assignments. DCPS said more than 700 have applied to switch to Duval HomeRoom for the second quarter.
Students who want to continue with Duval HomeRoom or brick-and-mortar do not need to register.
The selection and cancellation forms are available for parents through the Parent Focus Account in the same location as the previous enrollment period.
