‘I just hope they get it together and fix it quick’ Students experience issue with Duval Homeroom on first day

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Some students who began their school year on Duval Homeroom today weren't able to access some of their classes.

Action News Jax Courtney Cole went to the school district for answers and spoke to one of the students who faced problems.

Duval County Public Schools said it experienced a delay in bringing up Microsoft Teams for some online classes.

Even with the issue, DCPS told Cole many of the classes were still up and running throughout the day.

Action News Jax Courtney Cole spoke to one high school student who said she hopes it's not a recurring problem.

"When I got up this morning I had nothing. It kept saying, upload failed," said Nevah Waters.

Waters told Action News Jax she had been working since 7:00 a.m. this morning to try and get Duval Homeroom up-and-running.

"I only had one class, which was geometry and only one teacher up, so it was nothing else for me to do. No more classes on there," Waters said.

The Terry Parker High School Junior was supposed to have access to eight classes.

Laureen Ricks, a DCPS spokesperson, told Cole they're working to figure out what led to the issues with Microsoft Teams. Via e-mail, Ricks told Action News Jax:

"A  glitch in the system occurred when the technology department did a routine operation to ensure students enrolled in Duval Homeroom were synced with their classes. The tech team is working with Microsoft to resolve this and steadily getting more and more classes online."

Ricks told Action News Jax Courtney Cole they don't yet have a timeframe for when it will be 100% again, but we will continue to check-in on the progress.

If students experience issues, they're asked to fully log out and then log back into the system.

“I just hope they get it together and fix it quick, so we can get to learning and get all of this over with, because COVID is already a lot, a challenge for everybody,” Waters said.

The Duval County School District said students who experienced the delay with Duval Homeroom will not face any consequences.
