Former JSO officer accused of child sex crimes dies while in police custody

A former officer for the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office has died while in police custody, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

Action News Jax reported in January when James M. Trejbal, 67, was arrested and facing charges of: capital sexual battery, lewd, lascivious molestation on a victim less than 12 and of lewd, lascivious molestation on a victim between the ages of 12 and 15.

He retired from JSO in 1999.

Police said Trejbal was found unresponsive in his cell at approximately 5:20 a.m. Monday. First responders with the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department responded and pronounced him dead.

“Though this investigation continues, there appear to be no signs of foul play at this time,” JSO said.

Court records show he pleaded guilty on Feb. 27 and was sentenced to life in prison.
