Jacksonville man claims racial stereotyping at local Wendy’s

“The cashier asked me for my name, so I told her it was ‘Jonathan.’ At the corner of my eye I saw the word on the screen — ‘China’ popped up,” he told Action News Jax’s Robert Grant.

A closer look at the receipt confirmed what Tamares thought he saw. The receipt read ‘China’ in place of his name.

“I was just kind of in shock and appalled. It was rather insensitive how that came about.”

Tamares is from the Philippines and is proud of his heritage. The same heritage he said was the target of racial insensitivity.

He tweeted at Wendy’s, which responded, “That’s not okay! Please DM us the restaurant location and your phone # so we can look into this. Thanks!”

Action News Jax also reached out. In a statement, a representative said, “We are aware of this customer incident. We value our customers and this behavior is completely inconsistent with our core values. We are looking into this matter and will take appropriate action.”

Jonathan said so far, he has not heard anything more from the franchise.
