Jacksonville teacher uses election to teach lessons in the classroom

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Ashley Rogan traded her career in campaigns for the classroom.

Rogan told Action News Jax she “really felt called to come teach, specifically civics to students.”

From an education standpoint, the 2020 election is perfect for her 7th and 8th grade students at River City Science Academy, according to Rogan.

“I don’t dumb it down for them. I think it’s important for them to understand, kind of, the real complications of this process,” she explained.

Rogan said kids' confusion over the electoral college is an opportunity for in-depth lessons and hands-on activities.

“We did a mock election here where they all had voter IDs and they got to log into the computer and cast their ballot for president,” Rogan said.

The teacher said the activity isn’t about a winner and a loser.

She wanted her student to walk away with a much bigger message.

“Win with humility and lose respectfully. I hope that our generation shows them right away to handle at the end of the day, because they’re watching,” Rogan said.
