Pet cemetery owner helps uncover WWII veteran’s lost pet grave site

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A World War II veteran is desperate to find his pet’s grave. He and his family set out to visit their furry family member at a local cemetery, but couldn’t find the headstone anywhere.

Robert Andrews Sr. buried his beloved poodle, Robear, at the Pet Memorial Gardens Cemetery more than three decades ago.

“I called him my son. We were real close; he was like one of the family,” Andrews said.

Andrews, 92, and his family wanted to visit Robear again, but when they got here, they couldn’t find him.

“We can’t find him nowhere,” Andrews said.

His family went to work, uncovering several of the headstones trying to find him, but no luck.

Andrews’ daughter, Rebecca Clark, says she couldn’t get a hold of the owners, so Action News Jax set out to get answers and was able to get in touch with the current owner, Janet Davis.

She rushed out to the cemetery searching for the headstone for over an hour.

“I feel a responsibility to do the right thing. I feel bad that he wasn’t able to contact me, but I feel grateful that you came,” Davis said.

She wasn’t able to find the headstone, but based on her map, she knew it was supposed to be back in the oldest part of the cemetery.

“The headstones are not like you see them now. They were just cylinders that they painted the names on. Some had a little bit of engraving that was on them, but it has weathered,” Davis said.

And now, Davis hopes Andrews can rest easy knowing Robear is cared for and would even like to know a thing or two about him as well.

“I would love to meet him and his daughter, and I would like to hear stories about his dog.”
