JACKSONVILLE — A family found a Purple Heart and other medals in a condemned Jacksonville home. Now, they want to get those medals back to the man who earned it.
“I’m sure there is someone in his family that would like to have them,” said Rebecca Martin.
Five years ago, Martin’s fiancé, Austin Kite, found the medals in the condemned house -- he was with a team working to tear it down. The medals were in a box and were later stored away. As they were recently moving into a new home, they found the medals.
The medals belong to Joe Taylor, but they need to find out if he is alive or if he has family. Martin is posting information about the three medals, hoping to find the veteran or his family.
“It’s a great honor to receive any kind of reward like this, especially from a high standing," said Martin. “He must’ve been an incredible person to get these awards.”
Plenty of mystery here. But there’s one thing we know for certain.
“Regardless of the reason he got them, which we may never know, he did serve for our country,” she said.
Martin said the couple have contacted the VA and Purple Heart Association. They are trying to find the owner or his family as well.
