FDOT inspecting bridge after massive fire broke out underneath it in Northwest Jacksonville

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — March 23, 5:41 a.m. Update: Southbound lanes of Edgewood Avenue have reopened after being shut down early Tuesday morning following a fire that damaged the bridge above the road.

March 22, 8:45 p.m. Update: According to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office, the southbound lanes of Edgewood Avenue between New Kings Road and Old Kings Road will remain closed for an undetermined time.

To detour, take New Kings Road to Soutel Drive and then turn on Old Kings Road.

March 22,11:45 a.m. Update: All northbound lanes of Edgewood Avenue have been reopened, but all southbound lanes remain closed until the inspection of the bridge is complete.

A bridge is closed in Northwest Jacksonville to allow the Florida Department of Transportation to inspect its structure after a massive fire broke out underneath it overnight.

According to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office, a fire broke out at the Norfolk Southern railyard off Edgewood and New Kings Road. A crane caught fire under the portion of Edgewood Avenue that crosses Norfolk Southern’s railway, damaging the bridge.

The Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department said there was an issue with a fuel/hazardous materials spill.

The fire has since been put out, but the bridge and Edgewood Avenue are both closed.

JSO said due to the damage to the overpass, it will remain closed until FDOT advises it is safe to reopen.

To head north, drivers can take Old Kings Road to Soutel Drive as an alternate route. To head south, drivers can take Moncrief Road to Soutel Drive.
