Retired JSO detective officially charged with first-degree murder

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — It has been over 21 years since local business owner Saad Kawaf was stabbed to death in his Deerwood/Baymeadows home.

Today, the state attorney announced William Baer Jr. has officially been charged with first-degree murder by a Duval County grand jury for the murder of Kawaf.

Baer, a former Jacksonville Sheriff’s detective, is also being charged with kidnapping with a weapon, armed robbery and aggravated battery.

After 21 years on the run, Baer was arrested in July of 2020, along with his co-defendant and ex-wife Melissa Schafer, for the murder of Kawaf.
