Neighbors rush to help teenager shot in Riverside, woman taken into custody

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A teen boy is in serious condition and a woman is in custody after a shooting Monday afternoon in Riverside. The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office said the shooting happened shortly after 2 p.m. on Willow Branch Ave. and Forbes St.

Robert Filacchione said he was working on a nearby home when he heard the shooting. “Three loud pops. You know, pop, pop pop,” Filacchione described. Filacchione said he walked out front where he saw people huddling over the teenager.

“I saw the kid laying on the road on his back with blood on his shirt,” Filacchione said.

Police said the victim was shot multiple times. Filacchione said the teen was talking and alert, but he had a hard time breathing.

“They kept asking him questions, but he was gasping for breath,” Filacchione said.

Filacchione said the teenager was wearing an ROTC uniform and it appeared he was walking home from school when he was shot. Robert E. Lee High School is right around the corner from where the shooting happened.

“He didn’t deserve that,” Filacchione said. “Seeing a kid laying on the ground getting shot for no reason. I mean, that’s just unacceptable. It’s disgusting, really.”

Filacchione said the boy seemed petrified. He asked the victim what happened. “He was like, ‘I don’t know. This woman just came at me and just shot me.’” Filacchione recorded a five-minute cell phone video right after the shooting.

Action News Jax chose not to share the footage because it’s too graphic.

In the video, neighbors tried to comfort the boy until rescue arrived. One man even prayed over the teenager and told him he was going to be okay.

Meanwhile, Filacchione said a neighbor ran after the suspect and was able to help police catch her. JSO said a gun was recovered at the scene. The suspect was taken into custody. Action News Jax is working to learn her identity to figure out what she could be charged with.

Filacchione said he’s seen the woman before and he described her as being mentally unstable. “She’d be in the middle of the street cussing and saying really nasty stuff to nobody,” Filacchione said.

Neighbors said they were shocked a shooting happened on their street. However, Filacchione, who lives nearby, said crime is creeping closer to home and said he hears gun shoes quite often. “Lately, it’s changed I think,” Filacchione said. “It’s starting to bleed out closer to home, which is scary.”

A JSO crime map search showed 14 reported assaults and 3 robberies within a one-mile radius of the neighborhood in the past four weeks.
