JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Duval County Public School officials notified parents and guardians it is eliminating 110 teachers positions due to enrollment changes.
The communication Friday said eliminated positions include vacancies, and that teachers whose positions are cut will be notified by school leaders and receive support.
Last year, the district reallocated 115 teachers positions, eliminating vacancies and teacher positions - citing similar enrollment changes.
Officials said it assesses enrollment, including at each school, two weeks into the school year to see what changes are needed.
“As a result of this process, teachers may be reassigned to other positions in the district based on the shifts in student enrollment and district needs,” the letter said.
Schools with enrollment increases will receive staff from schools with lower enrollment. The changes affect most schools and all grade level, officials said.
Last year, the district said the process is required by law and “helps to ensure resources and staff are allocated efficiently based on student needs.”
Lower enrollment, rising costs and an increase in vouchers for charter and private schools cutting into the district’s budget have inspired several other changes in recent years.
As part of its master facilities plan passed in 2024, hundreds of teaching positions were also cut and multiple elementary schools closed their doors in 2025.
Several more school consolidations occurred in 2026 after being delayed in last year’s decision-making. They included:
- George Washington Carver closed, with students consolidated with Rufus E. Payne
- Hidden Oaks Elementary consolidating with Cedar Hills
- Don Brewer Elementary closed, with students consolidated with Merrill Road
- Hyde Grove Elementary School closed, with students rezoned to either Hyde Park Elementary School or Ramona Boulevard Elementary School.
