EXCLUSIVE: Family identifies 17-year-old killed in Nocatee crash, now urging people to buckle up

St. Augustine, Fla. — A 17-year-old was pronounced dead early Thursday morning after a fatal crash in Nocatee.

Family and friends tell Action News Jax the teen is Georgie Moreland of St. Augustine.

They said he loved his family, friends, football and video games.

A sergeant with the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office said the crash happened at the intersection of Cross Town Drive and Preservation Trail.

Moreland died of his injuries after the vehicle went down a dead end road and off into the woods.

The teen was the passenger in the 2013 BMW.

The driver, who according to an official crash report from the Florida Highway Patrol was operating the motor vehicle in a careless or negligent manner, is expected to be ok.

Family said the two were friends coming home from a night out, but at this time Troopers do not believe drugs or alcohol played a role in the crash.

Moreland’s sister, surrounded by her mother and friends, spoke exclusively with Action News Jax Friday.

She said her brother was stubborn about wearing a seatbelt.

“Always wear your seatbelt,” Trinity Moreland said. “Everybody thinks that it’s not that big of a deal, but it does save your life.”

“I always knew that my brothers gonna be right there right next to me and he’s not now so it’s eye-opening that things can happen and you won’t expect it,” Moreland continued.

Friends set up a GoFundMe page to help the family with funeral expenses, if you feel inclined to help.
