ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. — The son of a local couple killed in a head-on crash on St. Simons Island said he’s leaning on the support of the community.

“They were my favorite people in my life. They were someone I looked up to and my best friends," Alex Lalley, 21, told Action News Jax.

According to the Georgia State Patrol, Kent and Donna Lalley were hit by Jade McCray on June 1.

Troopers said the 28-year-old was going 86 mph in a 25 mph zone of Ocean Boulevard when she hit the couple’s minivan.

The state patrol said it was investigating whether McCray was under the influence.

Troopers said McCray and her passenger died instantly.

Alex said his parents died over the weekend.

The 21-year-old said, “The past week has been overwhelming, as much, but with a lot of my friends and family I’ve been getting through.”

Wreaths were set up at the site of the crash.

It’s one of the ways in which local families rallied around Alex and his sister.

Tony Langford, pastor at First Baptist Church of St. Simons said the Lalleys had a huge impact on the congregation and community.

He said, “They knew a lot of people, even in their short time here. They were easy to get to know. They were just kindhearted people.”

Alex said he’s focused on making sure his parents are remembered for the lives they touched.

“I know you’ll always be there with my sister and I to lead us, even if you’re not there physically,” Alex said, speaking to his parents.

A memorial service honoring Kent and Donna Lalley is set for Monday at 11 a.m. at the First Baptist Church of St. Simons on Ocean Blvd.
