Original story below:

Family and friends held a viewing on Wednesday night to remember 3-year-old Connor Mickens.

The toddler died after police say he was shot in the head by his mother's ex-boyfriend.

Now the family says they’re turning this tragedy into motivation to help others

“You look in his eyes … and you just fall in love,” family member PK Mickens said.

A child’s eyes that were closed too soon.

“He was so innocent,” Mickens said.

“I try to not cry and just keep a smile on my face knowing he’s in a better place now,” friend London Jenkins said.

Connor and his mother were shot inside their Westside home on Oct. 19. Connor’s mom would be OK, but Connor later died.

Connor’s mom’s ex-boyfriend, Brian Littles, was arrested on a battery and gun charge.

One family member said Wednesday night they’re turning their pain into motivation for a new mission.

“We will just continue to raise awareness against domestic violence,” Mickens said.

“I want them to know when you first get a sign of domestic violence … get out as fast as possible cause you don’t want anything like this to happen,” London said.

A strong message from a sixth-grader now left to remember the moments she shared with her friend.

“He was very … in love with fidget spinners, he was just a normal kid,” Jenkins said.

Littles is due in court to officially face charges on Nov. 13.
