Family safe, but two dogs perish in Oakleaf Plantation fire

A Clay County family is picking up the pieces after losing nearly everything in a house fire Thursday night.

CLAY COUNTY, Fla. — The State Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the cause of the fire, which broke out on the 600 block of Timbermill Lane.

“We were supposed to have Easter at my house,” said Chrissy Crowder. “That’s not going to happen anymore.”

Chrissy Crowder says her family was at dinner Thursday night when neighbors called and told them their home was on fire.

“We, of course, rushed back,” she said. “By the time we got here, our roof was caved in.”

Crowder says the two family dogs were inside.

“We had a little Boston Terrier, he was 7 years old,” Crowder said. “And we just rescued a beautiful pit, she wasn’t even two.”

The State Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the fire, but family and neighbors say they believe it was caused by lightning.

“My neighbors heard a big boom, and another neighbor was out and she saw the smoke,” Crowder said.

Crowder says she, her husband and two young children will spend Easter with family.

The Red Cross has also offered the family a place to stay, and neighbors have set up a GoFundMe account for the family.
