FDA approves Pfizer vaccine in kids 12-15 years old, some schools preparing for rollout

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Now that the FDA has approved Pfizer to administer its vaccine in kids 12 to 15, we wanted to know if school districts in our area would be offering it to students.

The CDC will make its own recommendation as early as Wednesday.

Depending on what the CDC says, school districts like Alachua Schools are already getting ready to offer them at clinics on their middle school and high school campuses. Alachua Schools already has several tentative dates scheduled on their website.

“We got it here, why not?” said Elyzabeth Rodriguez, a mother of four. “Please go ahead and get vaccinated because this is not the end of the pandemic, this is not the end of the [coronavirus] so we need to get our kids safe.”

She supports schools offering the vaccine. Rodriguez says she works in the medical field, and sees vaccines not being used.

“We [are] all living in the pandemic, we live all that and it’s not stopping yet. “I can tell you from my own experience we see many vaccines be discharged just because people not show up to appointments or people make the appointment and just not come,” she explained.

Meanwhile, Janet Allen’s family hasn’t gotten the vaccine themselves.

“Maybe in 5 years, and we said there was (sic) no repercussions, then I might would do it (sic),” she said. “If I had a kid, I wouldn’t do it.”

St. Johns County Schools says it doesn’t have plans of offering the Pfizer vaccine to students at this point and the board hasn’t discussed it.

A spokesperson for the Clay County School District shared the following statement with us:

The School District has reached out to our partners with the Department of Health-Clay County and how we can assist with the implementation of the vaccine roll-out for ages 12 and older. At this time, both of our agencies are waiting for more information once the FDOH receives ACIP guidance. Meanwhile, we are waiting to hear back from the Nassau County District and Duval County School District on whether they have plans to offer the Pfizer vaccine to their students.
