FDOT Confirms deadline on I-295 construction

The Florida Department of Transportation told Action News Jax the project to create two new toll lanes on either side of Interstate 295 is expected to be complete by the end of the year.

“I think we’re looking at some time this fall for those to open,” FDOT Public Information Officer Sara Pleasants said.

The announcement comes after intense traffic Tuesday morning. The Florida Highway Patrol responded to five separate crashes along interstates 295 and 95, which causes hours of delays.

Drivers were stalled in northbound lanes from the crashes from about 7 a.m. until 9 a.m. However, a portion of the delays were due to construction in the area as well.

“We get it,” Pleasants said. “We drive the same roads everyone else does, we get caught in traffic sometimes. But we’re just looking forward to improved roads, improved compactly and it’s a temporary inconvenience for a long-term transportation solution.”

FDOT is adding two new toll lanes to I-295 in both north and southbound directions. Once complete, drivers can choose to use the new toll lanes or the old free lanes for their commute.

Until the project is finished, FDOT urged all drivers in the area to be aware of construction zones for their safety and the safety of their crews. They also advised drivers to plan ahead and take alternate routes to avoid traffic.

“Just pay attention, avoid distractions, stay off your phone, don’t text and drive and watch out for the construction workers,” Pleasants said. “They have families too, and we want everyone to stay safe in our construction zones.”
