JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — All but a few apartments in Building H of the River City Landing Apartments near Jacksonville University are a total loss after a fire broke out around midnight Saturday.
Chief Martin Senterfitt said he believes all except two, possibly four apartments are a total loss.
The rest of the complex's 32 apartments have smoke and water damage.
Senterfitt said two people sustained minor injuries and several firefighters sustained minor burns.
Water had to be hosed in from 2,000 feet away because the one hydrant on the premises was a dead-end hydrant.
Red Cross volunteers say they have helped 19 families, a total of 41 people, with emergency needs such as food, clothing, temporary lodging and medications who were displaced because of the fire.
People who were at work or off the premises during the fire met with caseworkers to receive need assistance.
The state fire marshal is investigating and the area will be closed off until Saturday afternoon.
The Red Cross says anyone who has been affected by this fire, but has not yet been able to meet with a Red Cross caseworker should call 904-358-8091 for help with immediate needs.
