ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. — Fire crews in St. Johns County battled a fire at Golf Carts of St. Augustine, and St. Johns County Fire Rescue says the building is a total loss.
The business is at 5960 U.S. 1. When Action News Jax arrived, neighbors were watching as crews worked to put out the fire. At least six fire trucks were at the scene.
Viewer video shared with Action News Jax showed just how much smoke there was and how big the initial response to the fire was.
Neighbors told Action News Jax they’ve never seen a fire like this.
“We went outside. We saw a smoke cloud probably 200 or 300 feet up in the air and then we started hearing batteries blowing up,” said St. Johns County resident Bradley Dill. “I’d see at least a hundred of them.”
“We actually had to pull out of the building to do a defensive operation just because of the amount of fire,” said Chris Naff, a spokesperson for St. Johns County Fire Rescue.
Naff said the building and everything inside appear to have been destroyed by the fire. Assets on a back lot were not damaged.
St. Johns County Fire Rescue says no one was hurt. Officials are unsure what started the fire. The fire marshal will conducted an investigation.
Part of U.S. 1 was expected to remain closed while crews finished up at the scene
