Police identify first minor killed in Jacksonville in 2019

Police have identified the victim in Thursday’s fatal shooting at the Avesta Apartments in Baymeadows as Xavian Davis, a 16-year-old boy.

Police found him at the apartment complex Thursday night with a gunshot wound. Police say he was taken to a local hospital and was later pronounced dead.

Davis’ friend said he was a student at Atlantic Coast High School. She showed Action News Jax a social media page she said belonged to Davis, where loved ones are offering their condolences.

A neighbor who asked not to be identified for her protection says she’s tired of the violence in Jacksonville.

“Do something different other than fighting with guns, killing,” she said. “Because it’s senseless. These young people don’t even know what it is to live, they’re not even living to be 21 years old!”

JSO’s Crime Map reveals 39 records of homicide, robbery and assault in the last six months within a half mile of the incident. Transparency data lists the incident address for Davis’ murder as the same location where 16-year-old Diego Morales Perez was killed on Old Baymeadows Road in mid-December.

“Teach these kids that it’s not about violence,” said the neighbor. “… they should be able to settle their differences. Come talk to adults, get a mediator, do something different other than fighting with guns, killing!”

According to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office's transparency data, neither case has been cleared by an arrest.
