Potholes on North Jacksonville road raising safety concerns

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Drivers who live near Owens Road on the North Jacksonville have been dealing with potholes and a deteriorating road for months. The rain in Jacksonville Friday did not help.

Homeowners said they are having a big problem trying to get anyone to fix the road.

One side is impassable and the other has a huge pothole. Frankie Butler said he experienced the dangers of the road firsthand.

“My whole car went off the road and about knocked the whole bottom of my car off,” Butler said.

Orange barricades blocked a portion of Owens Road near the airport Friday.

Cricket and Bailey Nettles live nearby and said they brought the issue to Action News Jax after repeated attempts to get the road fixed.

“I’ve called the city trying to get them to come out to repair and they said they’d send somebody,” Bailey Nettles said. “Then they put a barrier up and that’s really their solution.”

Owens Road is maintained by the city, but about 2 miles down the road, the Florida Department of Transportation is working on a project to extend State Road 243.

“They've had all the dump trucks coming through here and they tore up the whole road,” Cricket Nettles said.

The FDOT said the road was already in bad condition and while it’s not clear whether the trucks damaged it further, the trucks have stopped driving through the area.

Action News Jax went to the city to find out how this happened.

Tia Ford, a representative for the city, said, “The underlying problem appears to stem from stormwater runoff coming from I-95 and Owens.”

Ford said the Right of Way and Storm Water Maintenance Division is already aware of the issue.

There are plans to repair the damage next week.
