Friend of FSU shooter speaks about his mental illness

Strozier Library at FSU opens after the shooting that injured three people.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — When bullets were fired off inside Strozier Library on Florida State University's campus Thursday, alumnus Stephen Smith feared for his fraternity brothers who were in the library at the time.

When the Jacksonville attorney found out the shooter was his friend and colleague Myron May, grief took over.

"I kinda let my mind come to grips with the fact that my friend had done something this heinous," said Smith.

They both went to FSU and then went to law school together.

May was a prosecutor in Texas, and New Mexico, and recently moved to Florida with plans to practice law here.

Smith said he heard of his return to the panhandle through social media, which is how they often communicated.

"He posted on Facebook last week wishing me a happy birthday," said Smith. "I never saw a change in him. All I've known of Myron is to be a very nice guy."

It wasn’t until after three FSU students were shot that Smith started scanning through May’s Facebook page looking for answers.

"It seemed that he had some paranoia about police watching him," he said.

Mentally unstable is the reason Smith gave us when we asked why May might have done this.

"He spent a lot of time in Strozier Library. I think that may be a reason why he had gone back there to commit the act," said Smith.

Smith said May was staying with a foster family to get back on his feet at the time of the shooting.
