Girl jumped at middle school suffering concussion, mom pressing charges

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Parents met Thursday at Jefferson Davis Middle School to discuss out-of-control school fights.

And now her mom wants to press charges against the other girls involved.

Regina Caldwell came back to Jefferson Davis Thursday on a mission.

She's fighting for her 13-year-old daughter who she says was forced to defend herself when three girls jumped her on campus Monday.

“We have to teach children a lesson,” Caldwell says.

Aniya suffered a black eye and cuts on her leg -- but her condition worsened two days after the brutal brawl.

“She has a concussion.  She's been vomiting dizzy spells. It's really bad,” Caldwell said.

“She's been complaining of having some headaches so I ended up taking her and now we have a serious medical issue on our hand,” Caldwell said.

Aniya has a concussion and hasn't been able to go back to Jefferson Davis.

So now this mother is going after the three girls, the only way she knows how.

“I have decided along with Aniya's father that we are going to press charges today for assault against her,” Caldwell said.

Caldwell says she is pressing charges against the teen girls. One of them was supposed to be Aniya's friend.

“She is going to be receiving extensive counseling services through a company that I do know very well so that's a good thing to get her motivated to go back to school and at least have some trust with students and also with teachers really,” Caldwell said.

She explained this at the meeting with school leaders.

Action News tried to sit in on that meeting, but was told the other parent didn’t want us there.

We did find out after that the school is cooperating with Caldwell.

When Action News asked Caldwell if Aniya would be coming back to Jefferson Davis Middle School she said that they are considering it, but also looking into other options for her education.

Two of the girls were suspended for seven days, one of them for 10.

Aniya was suspended for three days for defending herself.
