Grandmother killed outside Kelly's Place in Jacksonville remembered during vigil

It has been exactly one week since a local grandmother was shot and killed at her favorite hangout.

Family and friends gathered Thursday night to remember 48-year-old Jennifer Nelson.

“She’s going to be truly missed. She’s going to be missed,” said Tarsha King.

Nelson, a mother of four and grandmother of five, was shot and killed in the parking lot of Kelly’s Place.

Tears, hugs and raw emotion were seen throughout the vigil. Family members placed candles on the ground, spelling "R-I-P Jen, Rest In Peace."

It ended up being too much for Nelson’s mother. She broke down in tears, unable to speak.

Action News Jax was on the scene the night of the shooting as police roped off a car with crime scene tape.

Police say multiple shots were fired.

“This is a tragedy no one ever saw coming. We would have never thought that a night out would come to her losing her life,” said Nelson.

It’s something her daughter Khaliyah Nelson doesn’t understand.

“What was you thinking? That’s crazy, like you didn’t look inside this car to see who you was shooting at?” said Khaliyah Nelson.
