A Green Cove Springs family says they’ve had a hole in the roof of their rental home for nearly a year.
Now it’s led to water damage and they can’t get anything fixed.
The family tells Action News Jax it started with a water leak last summer that eventually led to standing water in a bedroom.
The family talked to Action News Jax Courtney Cole, who tried to get them some answers.
"Every time it rains, it drips -- literally runs down all the way and pools on the floor,” said Shannon Mullins.
She moved from Indiana to her Creekfront Drive home in Green Cove Springs, nearly two years ago.
Mullins says she and her husband first realized there was some sort of leak in their bedroom in June 2017.
"We noticed water just kind of pooling here in the carpet. And everything in the closet was getting wet."
Mullins said they immediately pulled everything from the closet and contacted the property management company, American Homes 4 Rent.
Then the company sent out a subcontractor to take a look at the problem.
"The first guy came out and he thought it had something to do with the floor leaking, kind of like groundwater coming and pooling from the outside,” Mullins told Action News Jax.
But it turned out the leak was coming from the roof.
Even when it's not raining, it's still a safety hazard.
You can see where the inside of the wall is darker and still wet. There is also a hole left behind from the damage.
But what you can't see as well is how the water has damaged the wood that supports the structure of the home.
Mullins says the company has sent several subcontractors, but the problem still isn't fixed.
“Now we’re on our 10th vendor. He came out, crawled through the roof, said there’s a bunch of damage, structural damage.”
She says the property management company can't seem to come to an agreement with a subcontractor when it comes to how much it'll cost to fix it.
Mullins said one of the vendors told her it could cost $10,000 to fix it.
"If it were to really storm and this actually is a structural issue, one of the vendors said this whole section of the house could collapse and I could be sleeping right there."
Mullins said she's also facing another problem: mold.
"We tested positive -- the air, the wall, the garage for black mold."
She sent us the report taken by company called The Mold Detectives. Inside the report, it says an elevated spore count of Penicillium/Aspergillus was found in the interior location. This indicates a high probability of mold growth.
She said it's just another problem making it that much harder to sleep safe and sound in her bedroom.
Action News Jax reached out to James Bell, the district manager of American Homes 4 Rent to find out why the problem isn't resolved yet.
While Bell didn't feel comfortable sending a written statement, he simply said they're working with maintenance to fix the problem.
