High levels of toxic algae found in Doctors Lake near Boy Scout camp

Part of Doctors Lake in Clay County has tested positive for high levels of toxic algae.

A sample taken near the Boy Scout camp there on July 24 had 10 times the level of toxic algae that the Environmental Protection Agency deems safe.

The Department of Environmental Protection found 41 micrograms of the toxin per liter.

The EPA says anything higher than 4-micrograms per liter is a health risk for recreation in the water.

St. Johns Riverkeeper Lisa Rinaman said the toxic algae can cause skin irritation, even neurological damage if consumed.

St. Johns Riverkeeper Executive Director Jimmy Orth said boating can stir up toxic algae, causing it to become airborne and leading to respiratory problems.

“I would definitely think twice about going in if I got educated on the toxicity of it,” said Chuck Bursich, who lives on Doctors Lake and spent the day boating, tubing and swimming with his family.

The DEP also tested two other locations at Doctors Lake on July 24; both of those samples had safe levels of toxic algae.
