High tide causes flooding in San Marco and Mandarin areas

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The Mandarin and San Marco areas are experiencing flooding due to Hurricane Ian’s heavy rains combined with the high tide along the St. Johns River today.

Residents in both areas say high tide for them came early this afternoon and with all that extra water from Ian, they’re now seeing some flooding.

“To be safe we left,” says Mariah Revelle.

Revelle, lives on Landon avenue just steps away from the river.

She says around 2 this afternoon she experienced flooding near her home brought on by the high tide.

“It hasn’t been this bad. And I thought it would be bad during the storm and it wasn’t,” says Revelle.

Revelle says this flooding prevented her from parking like she normally does near her home.

“When we drove here it was a situation where we couldn’t park our cars here,” says Revelle.

Revelle’s son John was surprised by the water just steps away from their doorstep.

“And over there, there was more water there,” says Revelle.

Just eight miles south along the St. Johns River on Regina road, residents had the same problem as high tide came in.

Yards and roads were partially flooded.

Residents say the high tide came in around 2 or 2:30 this afternoon.

“This is the first little bit of flooding we’ve seen,” says Maxwell Perish.

Perish says although he didn’t receive flooding, he and his neighbors were prepared for it

“We expected some flooding, and I expected it to be a little worse,” says Perish.

Perish adds this much water was somewhat of a surprise where he lives

“We thought we had seen the most of it with the high tide cycles and this was a surprise. This was a surprise that the water has decided to come up now,” says Perish.

Perish adds he lives in a low-lying area and they are expecting the potential for more flooding due to the high tide coming into the area tomorrow.
