Historic home hauled out of Davis Shores to help control flooding

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — It's the end of an era in South Davis Shores.

The first home in this neighborhood will be carried out on a truck by the city of St. Augustine Tuesday morning.

The city manager said they have created a flood control plan for this property to help protect nearby homes.

The rundown cottage sitting at 91 Coquina Ave. is often described by neighbors.

It once belonged to the Milgrim family and was later purchased by the city.

"Not that it's really attracted vagrancy or anything, but its just been an eyesore back there," one neighbor, Jim Smith, said. "Everybody in this neighborhood whose been through these storms has suffered financially, mentally, one way. And this is just another way for the resident to move forward and kind of put it all behind us."

In June, Action News Jax reported the city offered $5,000 to preserve and move the house.

Action News Jax confirmed the Florida Agriculture Museum has claimed it and will be picking it up from St. Augustine Tuesday morning.

City officials have not finalized their plans for the property yet.

The St. Augustine city manager, John Regan, said once the house is gone, the city can begin its flood control project.

This includes elevating the land on this property to block potential flooding.

Once this is accomplished, he said, they have plans to install a neighborhood park.

Neighbors are skeptical but hopeful this will help abate flooding near their homes.

"Time will tell," Smith said. "It hasn't yet. It's not going to help us during a severe hurricane but just when extremely high tides in the fall and spring, full moons -- that's when we have the sunny day flooding."
