Jacksonville homeowners ticketed for parking in front of their own homes

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Local homeowners being ticketed for parking in front of their own homes are asking the city to make changes.

Kim Pryor of Springfield said she has been battling the city for months.

"This is right in front of the owner's house," she said as she pointed to a car that recently received a parking ticket.

It's illegal to park your car on a public street for more than 24 hours in Jacksonville.

Action News Jax learned that between June of last year and this month, 443 of these "unattended conveyance" tickets were given out in Jacksonville.

However, neighbors in urban residential areas often don't have a choice.

Pryor took a survey of her neighbors in Springfield. More than 70 percent of the respondents said they didn't have driveways or garages.

"There's six houses right here in this very short space," Pryor said. "None of which have driveways, none of which have garages."

Since then, residents have to get council members to relax the parking rules for residents.

They say most emails have gone unreturned.

Cherie DiChiara was parked in front of her Springfield home when she was ticketed.

"I decided to attend traffic court," said DiChiara. "Because the City Council members didn't reply and the one that did wasn't very helpful."

Emails and calls to Councilman Reggie Gaffney, who represents the district, went unreturned.

"I would really like to see someone be open to suggestion, and recognize this problem for what it is," said Pryor.
