Jacksonville drivers hopeful changes will relieve traffic near Town Center shopping area

Jacksonville drivers have strong feelings about traffic near the St. Johns Town Center.

Jasmine Sherrell told Action News Jax, “The traffic here is horrible.”

The Florida Department of Transportation is expanding the ramp onto northbound Gate Parkway toward the Town Center to three lanes.

Sherrell said, “I feel like if they widened up the road a little bit it would help.”

On eastbound J Turner Butler Boulevard FDOT is adding a new turn lane onto Gake Parkway headed south.

The department is also making the lanes easier to see.

Some drivers had their own ideas about what will help traffic flow.

Maria Davis said, “It gets really congested and the light only lasts maybe 30 seconds before they’re changing so it causes major backups.”

Drivers said they hope the construction will lead to an easier trip through Town Center.

Sherrell said, “It may slow it down a little bit more as it’s happening but once it’s finished it always makes it better, for sure.”

The changes are part of the East Beltway Improvement Project, expected to be completed this summer.
