Jacksonville father wants answers after 12-year-old, wife were shot

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A 12-year-old is in critical condition after someone opened fire on her family’s home early Sunday morning.

he girl, Julia, and her mother, Sheryl Rubright, were shot while they were sleeping. It happened when someone fired dozens of shots in the home on Hilly Road on the Northside.

Action News Jax was there on Monday when her father Christopher Rubright discovered more bullet holes on the side of his house.

“When you shoot my family up at 6 o’clock on a Sunday morning. No words,” said Rubright.

His daughter was sleeping in his bed with his wife when bullets sprayed their home.

“That’s my spot, they were in my spot and I fell asleep on the couch,” said Rubright.

Just feet away, Rubright was fast asleep as bullets penetrated through the walls and flew over his head. But, what jolted him were the screams coming from his bedroom.

“Then I woke up to the screams just before daylight and it was over it was done. All I could smell the drywall and dust everywhere,” said Rubright.

His wife was shot twice in the leg and his daughter was shot once in the leg and once in the abdomen.

"She was shot in the abdomen and the bullet bounced around and it got her liver, her stomach. They were able to fix it,” said Rubright.

Action News Jax was there when detectives were combing for evidence and marking all the shell casings on Sunday. The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office has responded to 86 crimes ranging from aggravated assault to burglary in a one-mile radius from Rubright’s home since Jan. 1.

Rubright said his girls will have reoccurring nightmares if they stay at their home, so after his daughter is released from the hospital he doesn’t know where they’re going to live.

“I want to be able to bring my daughter home, but I got to have another home. She will never be able to come back here,” said Rubright.

Rubright said he just wants to raise his family in a safe neighborhood.

JSO said they believe the shooter was in a dark, two-door car with a loud muffler.
