Jacksonville Mayoral candidates make final push to supporters as early voting ends

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Jacksonville mayoral candidates Donna Deegan and Daniel Davis both joined supporters Sunday afternoon as early voting ended in Duval County.

“It’s a final push,” said Davis.

“It’s been a wonderful day, wonderful last several days, “said Deegan.

Deegan attended a Souls to the Polls event on the Northside to court Democratic voters like Mariano Mendez who says early voting is critical.

“We also always have low voter turnout for the mayoral election. The more people to come out and vote, the higher turnout the candidate that everyone actually wants can be in there,” said Mendez.

Election observers tell Action News Jax that Deegan needs a substantial lead going into Tuesday to fend off an expected red wave of Republican voters.

Davis was joined by Jacksonville Sheriff T.K. Waters and Senator Rick Scott at Chimney Lakes Elementary School.

“You’ve got to go out and vote. If you are about what happens in your community you have to go out and vote,” said Scott.

Eric Moore didn’t say which candidate he supports but says people need to make their voices heard.

“It’s very important because it’s a big contrast between the opponents, and it’s very important for people to come out and make their decision and come out and vote,” said Moore.

Deegan and Davis gave us their perspectives on what separates them from each other when it comes to who will be the next Mayor of Jacksonville.

“You would not hire a CEO that didn’t know how to run a company or didn’t know how to work for a company. What you are hiring over the next 48 hours is the next CEO of our city,” said Davis.

“We will have a city that brings the people inside of the city government not one that is just used towards a handful of folks. That’s the biggest difference, between transparency and inclusion that’s the big difference,” said Deegan.

Election Day is Tuesday, May 16. Polls open at 7:00 a.m. and close at 7:00 p.m.
