JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Jacksonville Public Library will host 12 free writing and publishing workshops during Writer’s Day. The event takes place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 22, at the Main Library at 303 N. Laura Street.

The conference-style event is designed for teen and adult writers of all experience levels to develop their craft, explore publishing options and network with the local literary community.

New York Times and international bestselling author Madeline Martin will lead the featured workshop, “How to Craft Characters that Connect with Readers,” during all three workshop sessions.

Other sessions will cover topics such as publishing pathways, literary agents, manuscript formatting, poetry, revision practices, nonfiction and artificial intelligence in writing.

Additionally, student writers and staff from Élan international student literary magazine and Douglas Anderson School of the Arts will host a session on writing poetry inspired by visual art.

Katie Devanny serves as manager for adult learning at Jacksonville Public Library and discussed the event’s mission. “Since 2017, Jax Book Fest has shined a light on Jacksonville’s growing literary community,” Devanny said. “We have some amazing talent here in Duval County. We hope these free workshops help other aspiring authors find their own path to publication so their work can be featured on the Library’s shelves one day, too.”
