JIA cancels flights the day before Christmas due to freezing temperatures

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — According to AAA, 6.3 million Floridians are expected to travel for the holiday and 336,145 will travel by air.

Some travelers may have to make alternative holiday plans to get to their Christmas destination.

Jacksonville International Airport says 6,953 passengers were originally heading out of JIA today. However, the winter freeze is putting a lot of Christmas air travel on hold.

“Even if I have to fly the plane, I’ll do it,” says Katarina Nunes.

Nunes lives in Jax but she and her son Victor are trying to get home to Rhode Island so they can spend Christmas with their family.

In a tweet, Jacksonville International Airport said: “Winter weather will likely impact some travel plans today. Remember to check flight status with your airline for the most up-to-date information on your itinerary.”

“What time is your flight supposed to go out? It’s supposed to be 12:30 and now it’s 1:05. On the day before Christmas, do you and your son have any plans if your flight does get cancelled? No, no plans at all so it would be very sad if we don’t make it,” says Nunes.

Action News Jax took a look at JIA’s website today to see just how many flights were scheduled to depart out of Jacksonville. We noticed around 5:30 a.m. that there were 38 flights scheduled for departure. At noon, we noticed seven of them had been canceled.

Later that day, we found out there were 10 cancellations, eight of them being departures. JIA says it expects more cancellations as the temperatures get lower.
