JSO identifies suspect, victim in Wednesday morning Diamond Leaf Drive shooting death

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The Jacksonville community is learning more about the Westside mother of two, who died from a gunshot wound at Park West Hospital on Wednesday morning.

The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office says her name is Shonda Smith, 37.

Jeremy Murkey, 37, is now facing a murder charge for her death.

Murkey was Smith’s live-in boyfriend.

He told JSO officers he shot Smith in the throat.

Smith’s children were home when the incident happened and one of the kids called 911, according to Lt. Craig Waldrup of the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office.

The arrest report says the children were younger than 18.

After he shot Smith, Murkey told officers he drove her to Park West Hospital.

He tried to run away from the vehicle, but officers working at the hospital detained him.

Smith later died at the hospital.

When JSO officers arrived at Park West Hospital, Murkey admitted to shooting the victim and told them, "You can go ahead and put me in jail."

The circumstances that led Murkey to shoot Shonda Smith remain unclear.

The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office tells us this isn’t Murkey's first run-in with the law.

JSO says his criminal history dates back as far as the year 2000.

Murkey was arrested for a number of things, including but not limited to battery, possession of a controlled substance, giving false name or identification, possession with intent to sell cannabis.
