The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office announced the arrest of a suspect in a homicide that happened on Orion Street.

JSO arrested Shawn Smith, 33, in Atlantic Beach after a witness called police from a Dunkin' Donuts.

According to police, the victim, Demetrius Portee, 38, was taken to UF Health where he died.

JSO said witnesses told police that the suspect, Smith, had fled the scene with a possible witness.

The Sheriff's Office said that, later in the day, the Atlantic Beach Police Department responded to a call from a female at a Dunkin' Donuts.

The Sheriff's Office said the ABPD determined a female and male matching the description of the suspect and potential witness were at the Dunkin' Donuts.

JSO said the Atlantic Beach police officers let JSO know, and police were able to determine that the individuals were the two who had left the homicide scene.

The Sheriff's Office said that, during the investigation, police learned that the two had taken a car from the scene of the homicide and had driven it off State Road A1A and into a creek.

The Sheriff's Office said that its Dive Team was able to recover the vehicle.

JSO said the suspect was then brought to the police station, where he admitted to having a gun, being present at the scene of the homicide and committing the homicide.

The Sheriff's Office said the suspect was arrested on a charge of second-degree murder.

Police said they believe drugs were involved in the homicide.

The suspect cooperated, according to JSO.
