JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The father of one of the missing El Faro crew members is now taking a new step to help other families deal with the tragedy.
LaShawn Rivera is one of the 33 men and women believed to be lost at sea when the cargo ship was hit by Hurricane Joaquin.
“Prayer changes things,” says Pastor Robert Green. It’s a declaration, Pastor Robert Green says he quotes every day, but over the last two weeks, he’s been saying this phrase, more and more each day, “Our hope is that Shawn and his others ship mates made it off the ship into their suits are somewhere waiting to be rescued on an island,” Green said.
Pastor Green says, he’s been praying this prayer, since his son LaShawn Rivera disappeared from El Faro. Shawn and 32 other crew members were on the ship, when coast guard officials say it sank in the Atlantic Ocean on its way to Puerto Rico, in the middle of Hurricane Joaquin, “You feel a sense of loss, sometimes a sense of anger, when you think about the situation and the circumstances,” Green said.
That’s why Green is starting a prayer line for those families, especially himself, “Anywhere in United States and Canada, people can dial in and hear a word of scripture a prayer,” Green said.
Green says, since the coast guard called off the search, the constant updates about El Faro are not coming as often, but he’s determined to remain hopeful and push for change, “Making sure, that the 33 families don’t have to feel the pain, feel the hurt of a loss of a loved one ever again,” Green said.
The prayer line is every Tuesday at 8 p.m. The phone number is (605) 562-0020. The PIN is 970113846.
