Local student harmed in school restroom; teacher suspended without pay

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — More Jacksonville news: Chunky, spoiled milk served at Jacksonville middle school

A Jacksonville middle school teacher has been suspended without pay for allegedly failing to provide adequate supervision to students, according to a Duval County Schools' investigative report.

According to the report, teacher Diane Velez allowed two of her students to leave her classroom to go the restroom. The students were inside the boy's restroom for at least 20 minutes. During that time period, both of her students as well as another student from another classroom were "involved in an incident which resulted in harm to a student" in the boys bathroom, according to the the report.

"There is sufficient credible evidence including staff statements, email, written statement from Ms. Velez and school surveillance to support the allegation that Ms. Velez failed to provide adequate supervision to the students," the report revealed.

The report also stated that Velez was aware of the school policy that when a student is missing from class for more than eight to 10 minutes, that she must contact security and/or the school's administration.
