Local veterinarians seeing influx of animals due to pollen allergies

Jacksonville resident Steve Ritter has an 8-year-old golden retriever named Sol who loves to meet people and be outside, but Sol has to deal with allergies when he goes out.

“When he goes on the beach he scratched a lot and bites his paws,” said Ritter.

Doctors said when there’s a lot of pollen in the air, people develop respiratory issues.

They said animals develop them too, but they animals aslo experience more skin problems.

“Itching their faces, itching their ears, their feet,” said veterinarian Dr. Darryl Hill.

Dr. Hill said he’s seen an influx of cats and dogs come into his animal hospital suffering from allergies, and that for mild symptoms animals can be put on antihistamines, similar to one’s humans use.

But, he said it’s always important to bring your animal in to make sure they’re prescribed the right dosage.
