Jacksonville man accused of setting his ex-girlfriend on fire writes a letter from jail

The Jacksonville man accused in the murder of his ex-girlfriend Carol Demmons says he wants the death penalty.

Police say Darryl Whipple doused his girlfriend with a flammable liquid, and then set her on fire while she was working at a local Golden Corral in 2016.

Darryl Whipple, 60, wrote a lengthy letter to a Judge and the State Attorney explaining he wants to "pay the ultimate price."

The letter says:

“Willing to pay the ultimate price for the indicated offense, why can’t I! we’re no longer living a double life.“

He also writes bizarre statements like:

“Everyone wants heaven, but no one wants to die to get there, because on earth death is final.”

Demmons cousin Paula Smith says Demmons was a kind woman, and just became a great grandmother.

She says she and her family have not been able to forgive Whipple, and they want justice for Demmons.

‘What would make them do something so horrific to an individual in which they’re supposed to love.”

Whipple is due back in court Dec. 18, a trial date has not been set.
