Man accused of huffing chemical before hitting child, woman with U-Haul in Gainesville

A Gainesville man who hit a woman and child with a U-Haul was huffing a dusting chemical before the crash, police said.

Evan Harrison Hawes, 42, was driving a U-Haul in a Walmart parking lot on Sunday when he hit a woman carrying a child, officers said.

The woman suffered two fractures to her leg and femur and the child suffered minor injuries to her head, officers said.

Officers said there was evidence that Hawes was huffing Dust-Off, which was found in the car.

Someone reported seeing the same U-Haul hit property hit property behind the Sunshine Inn earlier Sunday.

Using tag information, U-Haul identified Hawes as the renter.

Officers found the U-Haul at Hawes' house, but no one answered the door.

Hawes faces charges of reckless driving resulting in serious bodily injury and leaving the scene of an accident with property damage.

He is in the Alachua County Jail.
