Man charged with murder of Jacksonville woman strangled to death in 2013

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office arrested and charged Marvin C. Jones, 50, with the 2013 murder of 71-year-old Marilyn Alu.

Police said Jones was hired by Alu to do housework. Then he strangled the grandmother of two, stole her jewelry and sold it with the help of his girlfriend at the time, 52-year-old Constance Messina.

According to police, Jones and Messina fled after the murder. Jones was eventually found in Texas by U.S. Marshals.

He was taken to Brevard County, where he was held on unrelated charges, including domestic violence.

David Perkins is the son of Alu. He said not a day goes by that he doesn't think of his mother.

"We miss her every day. You know, we would love to have her here right now," Perkins said.

Jones was brought to Jacksonville on Wednesday.

Lt. Steve Gallaher said police do not believe Messina was involved in the robbery and murder.

"She told detectives that Jones gave her the jewelry and that he said he bought it from a drug dealer. She said she pawned the jewelry, and they split the money," Gallaher said.

Jones admitted to having known the victim.
