Man on motorized scooter hit in SR 16 hit-and-run crash found dead nearly a day later on roadside

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. — A 41-year-old man who died after his motorized scooter was hit by an SUV Tuesday lay in a roadside ditch for about 16 hours before he was found, Florida Highway Patrol told Action News Jax on Friday.

The victim, who’s from St. Augustine, was riding the scooter westbound on SR 16 near Downs Corner Road at about 10 p.m. Tuesday, an FHP crash report states. That’s when he was hit from behind by an SUV that sent him and his scooter into a ditch on the side of the road, the report states.

The driver of the SUV left the scene of the crash, FHP said.

A person who was stopped in SR 16 traffic after 5 p.m. on Wednesday, the following day, noticed what they believed to be a body on the roadside, FHP told Action News Jax.

Authorities were called to the location at about 5:17 p.m. While they were on the scene investigating, a 47-year-old St. Augustine woman, whom authorities believe was driving the SUV, returned to the site of the crash, FHP told Action News Jax.

FHP said they now have the vehicle that hit the man and characterized the woman as a “person of interest.”

As of Friday morning, no arrests were announced and no charges filed. FHP said its investigation is ongoing.
