Man shot, killed at barbecue remembered as hardworking father

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Friends have shared with Action News photos of a man they say was shot and killed at a family barbecue on the Westside. The shooting took place off Dagail Lane on Sunday night.

The victim and the suspected gunman knew each other.

Those who knew the victim say they also knew the suspect and believe he's been caught and brought to the Duval County Jail.

"This should not have ended this way," said Elizabeth Chavez, friend of Lucio Martinez.

Friends and family members of Martinez are still mourning his loss. They said he was a hardworking father looking to support his children in Mexico. On Sunday afternoon, he was shot and killed at a family barbecue in this courtyard right in front of some of his closest friends.

"Someone crazy just pops out the blue and that's what he has to do? And out of hate? Envy? Who knows," Chavez said.

Action News has learned that the man believed to be responsible worked with Martinez. Police say the two men were fighting when one of them pulled out a gun and shot the other.

Neighbors and friends called 911 but the suspect took off before police got there. Chavez didn't witness the shooting but lives feet away from where it happened. She said she's holding onto their last conversation from Saturday.

"He came to say hi and stuff and he was like 'are you guys getting ready for Valentine's Day?' and I said 'yeah' and he said 'you guys look pretty enjoy your night,'" Chavez said.

Now, flowers and religious mementos cover the scene where Martinez died as the family waits for word from police about his killer.

"He's going to get what he deserves," Chavez said.

Action News has been checking on the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office jail log but it appears no one was arrested for murder over the weekend. We're still checking with JSO about that and will bring you any updates once we have them.
