Judge sentences Michael Dunn to life in prison for death of Jordan Davis

DUVAL COUNTY, Fla. — Michael Dunn appeared in Duval County Court Friday morning for sentencing in the shooting and killing 17-year-old Jordan Davis.

A jury found Dunn guilty of first-degree murder on Oct. 1. He killed 17-year-old Jordan Davis at a Southside gas station in November 2012 after an argument over loud music. Dunn was also sentenced for three additional attempted murder charges. He was found guilty of those charges in Feb.

Dunn's attorneys filed a motion for a new trial. However, Judge Russell Healey denied the motion.

Healey sentenced Dunn to 30 years for each of the three attempted murder charges, 15 years for shooting into the car and life in prison for the murder charge.

"I'm mortified I took a life," said Dunn in his very brief statement to the court.

Attorney Waffa Hanania said Dunn has been in jail for 692 days.

Jordan Davis' mother, Lucia McBath, spoke in court. "I miss his big, wide, toothy smile," said McBath. She went on to say he had a perfect smile and will keep him alive through photos on the wall.

"He [Jordan] will be with me for all of eternity," said McBath. "I chose to forgive you Michael Dunn for taking my son's life."

McBath's husband, Curtis McBath, and Jordan Davis' stepmother, Carolina Davis, also spoke during the hearing.

Dunn looked down as Jordan Davis' father, Ron Davis, spoke at court. Ron Davis said wishes no parent had to cry these type of tears.

Ron said he gave Jordan Davis his first kiss and could never imagine giving him his last kiss.

Healey said this tragedy should have been avoided, and that our thoughts and discussions should be how to treat one another.
This case shows that the justice system does work, said Healey.
