Jacksonville 2-year-old killed with unsecured, stolen gun; mom and boyfriend arrested

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The mother of a 2-year-old boy who died after being shot at a Westside apartment complex on February 9 has been arrested.

Donna Crump-Piedra, 29, was arrested Wednesday on two counts of child neglect and two counts of culpable negligence, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office booking records.

Crump-Piedra's boyfriend, 25-year-old Lephabion Griggs, was also arrested on charges related to the shooting. Griggs is facing charges of culpable negilgence and violation of probation.

The shooting happened at Morning Side apartments. The Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department transported 2-year-old Jaden Piedra to the hospital, where he later died.

Crump-Piedra told Action News Jax reporter Ryan Nelson at the time of the shooting that her son had accidentally shot himself with a gun that wasn't secured while they were visiting someone.

Police said that the gun was stolen and after the shooting, Griggs initially fled to Dallas, Texas. He agreed to meet with police when he returned to Jacksonville and he was arrested February 16.

According to a police report, Jaden's 7-year-old brother told investigators that Jaden shot himself with a loaded gun they found on a table in the apartment and said they were playing with it.

Police say evidence at the scene and an autopsy confirmed what Jaden's brother told them. Crump-Piedra and Griggs were sleeping on a couch nearby when the shooting happened, police said.
