More than half of homicide victims in Duval County are black males

There were 73 homicides in Duval County over the last six months. Twenty-five of the homicide victims are black males under the age of 30.

“Some unlucky fool decided to steal him from me,” said Kenneth Joseph, whose son, Donnell Joseph, 22, was shot and killed at a Westside strip club last weekend.

The shooting is added to the long list of homicides in Duval County.

JSO told Action News over the last six months, there were a total of 73 homicides, including the strip club shooting. Out of those 73, 40 are black males.  Out of that 40, 25 are black males thirty and under.

“That is the end result of kids making bad choices, of adults making bad choices,” said Charles Griggs, with 100 Black Men of Jacksonville.

Griggs says the number of homicides is too high.

“I think in light of the situation going on around the country, when we talk about African-American males, we do have an opportunity and an obligation to help students and young men make better choices,” Griggs said.

Meanwhile, Donnell Joseph's parents are hoping someone will eventually make the right choice.

“You know you might have gotten away from what you have done, and nobody is coming forward to tell us what really happened. But there is one person who knows, that sits high and looks low, you haven’t gotten away from him,” Kenneth Joseph said.

There is a GoFundMe account set up for the Joseph family, as they prepare for their son’s funeral.
